Baker Hughes develops instruments and methods for example for oil drilling purposes. Typically, the drilling bit is operated using a mud motor. The mud motor rotor and stator are exposed to severe wear as they are in contact with mud and each other.

Cormet has built a special disc-on-disc tribocorrosion testing instrument for Baker Hughes. The discs simulate the wearing action of the mud motor rotor and stator. The discs can be rotated independently and pressed together using controlled stress. The discs are rotating in a testing cell containing oil and mud. The temperature of the testing cell can be controlled as the discs create a lot of heat as they rotate against each other.
